I need to pour an 8 foot slab (40 feet long) for the front of the house (front porch). I need to pour a 12 foot slab (30 feet long) for the carport that will be at my side door. I do not want to add 4 inches of sand and then 4 inches of concrete because my Hardie Board siding starts on top of beautiful rock siding made of native rock.

12 years ago Yeah, you need sand to set the pavers. Sand is easier to level and makes a more solid base than gravel. You don't need a 2" layer on top of the gravel, but you need enough to make the base level. shehawk_grandecom_net 11 years ago Am putting down pavers in a row for a pathway.

Especially grade level cement. Especially in a climate with winters like ours in Pennsylvania. A worse way to go about it would be to lay the flagstone upon a bed of gravel and then cement the joints between stones. Horrible idea. The gravel base is flexible and will move ever so slightly during freeze-thaw.

Sand just locks and drains... 'fine' gravel will do the same and it's probably better. The particles are a tad larger than sand and allow water to drain faster before it gets a chance to surface freeze. If you have a drainage problem or slow absorption, the key would be that first layer of larger stone.

Should I put sand under gravel? So as previously commented how much sand and what is under it will affect success and how long it lasts before sand comes through (if it does). The gravel will work into the sand, but this is not bad at all (concrete is sand, gravel and a cement, 2 out of the 3).

We would not recommend putting sand in the bottom of a pond. While placing pebbles, rocks and gravel in ponds can be debated, the consensus is that sand is not really a great idea. This is for a number of different reasons. The main reason why sand is not recommended is due to how small the sand particles are.
