Galena has been produced from the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district in Wisconsin since the seventeenth century. Some mines started by Native Americans may predate this. Major lead mining occurred from the 1800's until the late 1970's. A few small lead mines operated by individuals persist to the present day.

In the early nineteenth century, Wisconsin lead mining was more promising and attractive to potential settlers than either the fur trade or farming. Its potentially quick rewards lured a steady stream of settlers up the Mississippi River and into Grant, Crawford, Iowa, and Lafayette counties in the early nineteenth century.

In the early 1800s, the attraction of Wisconsin lead mining brought thousands of settlers to Grant, Crawford, Iowa, and Lafayette counties in Southwest Wisconsin. By 1829, there were more than 4,000 miners in Southwest Wisconsin, producing 13 million pounds of lead a year—more than half of the nation's lead.

St. John Mine is mine found in the small town of Potosi, Wisconsin near Platteville. Like most mines, it started off as a cave. This cave, known as Snake Cave, was said to once be home to rattlesnakes. In 1825, a miner named Willis St. John was looking for new mine areas and came upon lead-containing minerals in the cave.

Mining in Wisconsin Local governments have primary responsibility for regulating nonmetallic mines, but the DNR provides oversight for local reclamation programs and ensures that quarries, gravel pits and other operations meet state reclamation requirements. French trappers discovered lead in the upper Mississippi Valley about 1690, and by 1763 the district near Galena, Illinois, had become a regular lead producer. The French-Canadian, Julien Dubuque, arrived in 1774 and made peace with the local Indians. He operated lead mines and furnaces in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois until his death in 1810.
